Dr. George Lam Reflects on LGBTQ Progress at York

Dr. George Lam describes the progress he has seen during his time at York College.

Dr. George Lam is an assistant professor of music at York College, where he teaches courses in music theory and composition. He studied music at Boston University, the Peabody Conservatory, and Duke University, where he received his Ph.D. He also serves a board of directors for CLAGS (Center for LGBTQ Studies) The Center for LGBTQ Studies provides a platform for intellectual leadership in addressing issues that affect lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender, and queer individuals and other sexual and gender minorities.

Asked he would like to share his views on in light of LGBTQ+ Pride Month, Dr. Lam has chosen to acknowledge the progress York has made in acknowledging the community.

"As an out faculty member at York College and CUNY, I am encouraged by the progress that we have made right here on our Jamaica campus: from the first-ever SAGA dance (“Encouraged To Be”) held in February 2014, to the Lavender Line exhibition last year, to our students’ and faculty’s active involvement in the annual Queens Pride, and to a new series of campus-wide LGBTQ events that were in the works for the 2019-20 academic year before we all had to shift gears a bit. This year, even though we aren’t able to celebrate our community and our achievements in person, I’m nevertheless encouraged by everything that we *can* do while being apart: to care for each other, to raise our voices when we need to be heard, and to create and make art. The momentous decision from the Supreme Court is both a testament to the work of our LGBTQ and ally community, as well as a reminder of the brighter days that lay ahead. Let 2020 be a year for us at York College to build on our momentum for inclusivity and love!"
