York’s School of Arts and Sciences Donates PPE in COVID Fight

In response to Governor Cuomo’s call for the donation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), several faculty members in the college’s School of Arts and Sciences collected this essential material and donated them to an invaluable facility in New York City.

Professors Dan Robie (Chemistry) and Francisco Villegas (Psychology) worked with CLTs across several departments (Karen Manifold, Evgeniy Slinin, Alireja Hassan and Omar Feliciano) to gather and pack the PPE. Professor Timothy Kirk (Philosophy) connected York to MJHS Hospice & Palliative Care, a facility he works with in his research.

MJHS Hospice & Palliative Care came to campus to pick up the PPE and stated that it had arrived in “the nick of time” as their supplies are being used faster than they can be replaced. The vice president, Laurie Chichester, expressed gratitude for the donation.

“I can assure you that anything you give us will be put to good use as we’re getting increasing numbers of COVID-19+ patients and PPE is in short supply,” said Chichester. “It will help in keeping our staff safe while providing patient care. York College’s generosity and cooperative spirit are an inspiration to us all. May you and yours stay safe and healthy!”

In a follow-up letter to Dean Chirico, the Manhattan-based MJHS says in part: "We gratefully acknowledge your contribution of 5 cases of gloves, 100 masks, 4 packs of blue bouffant caps, 150 gowns, and several head gear safety shield to MJHS Foundation for the COVID-19 Emergency Response.”

The letter continues, “Your generosity supports MJHS’s innovative programs and exceptional services delivered with compassion throughout the New York metropolitan area. MJHS Health System cares for the terminally ill, frail, and elderly in our community, regardless of age, race, culture, religion, or ability to pay. Our programs support the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of our patients and their families.”

Dr. Donna Chirico, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences extends gratitude to the faculty members and CLTs who made this donation come to fruition. But she also noted that York’s Public Safety team was also important.

“Thanks goes to Chief Massiah and our colleagues in the Public Safety Office,” said Dean Chirico. “The staff was gracious to store the PPE in the office until it was picked up by MJHS. Their cooperation in the midst of so many other demands is appreciated.”

York College thanks and applauds these outstanding members of its community!
