Services

The SEEK Program provides special academic, finance and counseling assistance to students entering college for the first time.

Counseling

All SEEK students are assigned a counselor during their first semester at York. Generally, students will remain with their assigned counselors throughout their stay at the college. SEEK counselors assist students with the following: choosing an appropriate major and career, making the transition from high school, and overcoming impediments to reaching their educational and personal goals. Counselors design and plan responsive innovative interventions to help students grow, learn, and persist in their pursuit of a college education and success as contributing members of the community.

SEEK Peer-Mentoring Program

Negotiating a large and complex university campus can be challenging for a freshman, but SEEK program students at York College are able to find support through the SEEK peer-mentoring program. The SEEK Mentoring Program provides incoming SEEK students with the opportunity to have a personal connection with an experienced and academically successful York upperclassmen who can help guide them through the college environment. Mentors provide encouragement and support to help students develop habits and attitudes that lead to academic and personal success.

Tutoring

The SEEK Program provides free tutoring services for all SEEK students in most subjects offered by the college. Tutoring is conducted in individual and group format.

Instructional programs

Successful academic achievement is of utmost importance while in college. The SEEK Program provides courses which develop the necessary skills of language usage and mathematics to aid students in acquiring the baccalaureate degree.

Financial Assistance

Financial Aid is provided on an individual basis according to the demonstrated and documented financial needs of the student. The SEEK Program awards financial assistance to economically eligible students to cover such expenses as transportation, books, and college fees.
All SEEK students must apply for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and PELL on a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form which is mailed to students at the beginning of the year. Students may also apply online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov

In addition to the above programs, other grants available are the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), which is a free grant award, the Federal Work Study (FSW) Program, which provides part-time jobs for students jobs for students who qualify, and low interest Federal Perkins and Direct Stafford Loans.

SEEK Enrichment Program

The SEEK Summer Enrichment Program is part of York’s commitment to academic excellence and to the provision of equal access and opportunities for students. The Program is an on-going effort designed to promote the integration of promising but academically under-prepared and economically disadvantaged first-time students into one of the City University of New York’s Senior Colleges.

The enrichment component of the program provides extracurricular activities that supplement the instructional program. They have included Communications-Speech, Cultural Diversity, Ecology, Career Development, and Computer Literacy.

The SEEK Learning Center

The SEEK Learning Center is a state-of-the-art, one-stop, multi-media facility specifically designed to assist SEEK students in achieving academic success. Students can also research careers, graduate schools and scholarship opportunities. The center is equipped with the latest computer software and hardware, full Internet access, and an array of books, magazines, and journals. Students are offered assistance in: identifying appropriate majors and career paths, the graduate and professional school application process, and identifying scholarship opportunities to help finance their studies at York and beyond.
