In their 2007 publication, "Student Learning Assessment: Options and Resources," the Middle States Commission on Higher Education lists service-learning opportunities as one of the strategies institutions ought to use to improve student learning.

( In 2015, bill A03006 was introduced in New York State, which, among other issues, calls for the requirement of "experiential learning as a requirement for graduation." York's Service Learning Advisory Board has formulated criteria for courses to be designated as service-learning on an ad hoc basis, as well as put together resources for support of pedagogy and scholarship.

An integral component to all service-learning courses is the opportunity to reflect in written and/or oral form, making a thoughtful connection between the work done in and out of the classroom. The Writing Studio of Colorado State University provides a guide for facilitating such reflection:

The Faculty Toolkit for Service-Learning in Higher Education provides many valuable resources for building a service-learning course from scratch, including a sample legal agreement that outlines ground rules that should be addressed between colleges and a community partners.
