Puerto Rican Studies
The Puerto Rican Studies Program
The Puerto Rican Studies program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the Puerto Rican, Caribbean, Latin American, and Latinx cultures. We continuously update and upgrade our program to reflect the prevailing economic, social, and political changes affecting the people of Puerto Rico both in the island and in the diaspora. We keep course syllabi up to date with the most current research and the ongoing emergence of new pertinent course materials. In addition, based on the rich Puerto Rican presence in New York, students are encouraged to partake in the cultural offerings provided by renown institutions such as: The International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival, Museo del Barrio, Pregones/PuertoRican Traveling Theater, The Nuyorican Poets Café, and the CUNY based Center for Puerto Rican Studies, among others, demonstrating the vitality of the Puerto Rican presence both in New York and in the U.S. at large.
Why minor in Puerto Rican Studies
The Puerto Rican Studies program provides students with both academic and extracurricular immersive opportunities to enhance their awareness of their surrounding Puerto Rican, Caribbean, Latin American, and Latinx cultures. The program was designed with two goals in mind. First and foremost, it is directed at those students interested in serving the Puerto Rican, Caribbean, Latin American, and Latinx communities in New York City and other areas of the United States. In conjunction with their disciplines, students will find that the Puerto Rican Studies minor offers more career opportunities in teaching, social work, journalism, and the health sciences, as well as the opportunity to work with minority community development and bilingual programs. Secondly, the Puerto Rican Studies program enables the students to pursue areas of specialization in graduate school programs in Puerto Rican, Caribbean, Latin American, and Latinx Studies, literature, linguistics, women’s studies, business administration and the social sciences. The three Puerto Rican Studies courses may then be taken, for instance, after completion of the Behavioral Sciences Area prerequisites. Students enrolled in these courses may be pursuing Majors in Business, Physical Education, History, English, Psychology, Sociology, Biology or African American Studies and end up taking the courses based on their professors’ or classmates’ recommendations.
