Yilmaz, Nuray

Nuray Yılmaz is an adjunct lecturer in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Anthropology. Her academic interests are centered around understanding the cultural framework of the Ottoman Empire, impart knowledge on the role the Empire played as an interregional leader, and the contribution made to the formation of the modern world. Yilmaz’s fieldwork is on the death, burial, and commemorative ritual practices of the Ottoman Empire, giving prominence to 18th-20th-century headstones, tombstones, and other grave markers. While she predominantly works in Turkey, her research spans across the Middle East, Southeast Europe, and North Africa.
