Physics (BS) Program Assessment

Mission

The mission of the Physics Discipline of York College - CUNY is to combine quality research, teaching, and service in order to inspire, educate and prepare our students to be productive contributors and leaders in their chosen field of physics and a wide range of allied disciplines; these disciplines and industry are our stakeholders. Furthermore, we maintain a rigorous program of training and seek to instill in students the culture of a rational, quantitative, data-based approach to analysis of any problem or situation. We provide high-quality and comprehensive undergraduate and graduate educational programs that help students acquire an appreciation of the physical world as understandable and explainable, and the power over our lives that it brings. The skills we teach have application to many of society’s needs. We provide opportunities for all students to advance the frontiers of knowledge through the creative research of faculty and students. Our discipline is focused on providing educational and scientific resources to the community as a whole.

Goals

• Acquire physics topic-specific knowledge by gaining a practical understanding of how fundamental physical principles, symmetry, probabilistic, and statistical principles lead to our understanding each area of physical phenomena.
• Develop the skill to apply a structured logical problem solving strategy that can be applied to all situations.
• Develop the skill to carry out a scientific experiment.
• Effectively communicate orally and in written form.
• Students are trained how to acquire proficiency at describing and predicting the qualitative and quantitative behavior and properties of materials & systems.
• Students have the opportunity to participate in current funded research
• Students should be able to work cooperatively with others.
