Information Literacy (IL) Support
The York College Library offers Information Literacy support for faculty.
Mission & Goals
- Educate students in proper use, evaluation and application of print and electronic resources
- Support research assignments and the College's curriculum, academic and special programs by focused library instruction
- Teach students the ethical use of information sources
- Motivate lifelong learners
The Library offers two kinds of Information Literacy (IL) support. Faculty may request IL consultations, where librarians review a syllabus and/or an assignment, and in a 30-minute follow up meeting, offer suggestions to enhance the instruction of IL concepts and improve students' ability to effectively complete assignments with a research component. Librarians can also make suggestions with respect to Open Educational Resources (OER) and the availability of required readings as course reserves. In addition, York faculty are welcome to book one-hour IL instruction sessions taught by librarians, which are specifically tailored to the course objectives or reseach assignment. While a syllabus review is helpful in determining the timing and content of the IL instruction sessions, faculty are encouraged, but not required to book an IL consultation prior to requesting an IL instruction session for students. The IL instruction sessions are equally applicable to both general education and upper division courses in meeting the accreditation and discipline-specific standards compiled by CUNY's Library Information Literacy Advisory Council (LILAC). The sessions are taught by library faculty, many of whom have a subject specialty in a given area or areas. Sessions are held in the Library IL Computer Lab (AC-3G09) for in-person courses, and can be held over Zoom for online courses.
To request a IL consultation or arrange for an IL class, please submit the form below. Please note the following policies:
- Submit your online request form at least one week in advance.
- Course instructor should stay with the class during the library session.
