Trichotomy: A Fireside Chat with Rachelle Antoine, York Alumna

Rachelle Antoine

“Trichotomy: Struggle. Search. Rebirth” by Rachelle Antoine, MSW, is an exploration into the life of a woman who has quickly risen to the ranks of a visionary leader, strategist and social impact professional. In her book, she explores the many seasons of her life, from seemingly insurmountable struggles to searching her soul to discover who she is and where she belongs, and finally, to a rebirth of self. Her book and work bridge personal development, community transformation, and creative expression.

On March 25, York College’s Department of Social Work, chaired by Dr. Selena T. Rodgers, co-hosted with the Student Government Association (SGA) a Fireside Chat with Antoine to discuss her book. The conversation punctuated her life, offering the audience a deeply personal insight into who she is and why she does what she does. Her impactful poetry and prose were divided into sections that allowed Antoine to slowly and deliberately unfold the layers of her personal life. Her parents and siblings, who were among the attendees of the waitlisted gathering, often nodded as she read deeply personal works, including the death of her uncle, who she was very close to.

The chat was rooted in giving, giving and sharing wisdom from her deepest self and giving to the community. Dr. Rodgers’ questions were poignant and unearthed deeper considerations that led Antoine to search for the truths that resonated with her.

She is an apt storyteller, thought leader, strategic consultant and community-centered professional who has paved the way for those yet to follow in her footsteps. “Witnessing Scholar Rachelle blossom into a purposefully placed leader has been truly awe-inspiring. Her journey—overcoming initial struggles in the SCWK 101: Introduction to Social Work course, budding as a Selma “Blood Sunday” Scholar, emerging as SGA President, and now flourishing as a celebrated author—fills my heart with joy,” said Dr. Rodgers.

The evening was rich with laughter, tears and reflection. “Sometimes all it takes is one person who believes in you, challenging your limits, and reminds you of who you’re meant to become. Their faith becomes the spark that ignites your transformation.” said Antoine. This quote, highlighted during the fireside chat, embodies the event’s essence, as well as the deep significance and origins of the mentoring relationship between Scholar Rachelle and Dr. Rodgers.

Angel E. Salmon, Founder and Cake Decorator of @cutecakesbyangel on Instagram and a proud member of the Class of 2002 from City University of New York (CUNY) York College Bachelor of Science Marketing Program, created the picturesque cake as an exact replica of Antoine’s book in a stunning three-tiered display, perfectly complementing the evening’s enriching conversation.

Antoine, a notable graduate from the Class of 2017, having earned her Bachelor of Science in Social Work from CUNY York College, leads external affairs for the $19 billion JFK Redevelopment Program, driving initiatives in education, workforce, and sustainability. She brings over a decade of experience, intersecting government affairs and public service. Her book mirrors her work, delivering bold healing-centered frameworks, while fostering growth and purpose.

The event concluded with a book signing, leaving attendees inspired by her example. The hosts—SGA and the Department of Social Work—thanked attendees, special guests, and Dr. Claudia V. Schrader, York College interim president and co-chair of the JFK Redevelopment Community Advisory Council Education Committee, for her attendance and welcoming remarks.
