During the Spring Break, Provost Dr. Brazill and Dr. Chris Hsu, chair of the Accounting and Finance Department, participated in a productive brunch meeting with Congressman Ted Lieu of California’s 36th Congressional district, while he was visiting New York City.

Congressman Lieu, who currently serves as vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus, is widely recognized for his leadership on technology policy, national security, and innovation. With a background that includes a degree from Stanford University and a distinguished career in law and public service, Congressman Lieu has been an influential voice on emerging issues, including artificial intelligence and digital assets.

The meeting was further enriched by a shared academic connection, as both Congressman Lieu and Provost Brazill attended Stanford University during overlapping years, fostering a collegial and engaging dialogue.

“Discussions during the brunch centered on key areas of mutual interest, including the evolution of cryptocurrency and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence,” said Dr. Hsu. “Congressman Lieu expressed particular interest in the application of AI in higher education, exploring how institutions like York College can leverage these technologies to enhance teaching, learning, and research.”

Dr. Hsu shared insights from his recent research on AI-driven algorithmic herding behavior in financial markets, contributing to a thoughtful exchange on how markets may be influenced or potentially manipulated by AI technologies.

Provost Brazill also took the opportunity to advocate for York College, highlighting its mission, diverse student body, and commitment to academic excellence. He extended an invitation to Congressman Lieu to visit the York College campus at a future date.
