The Mission Statement of the Health Promotion Center is "Achieving Optimal Health in the Entire Community". We work hard to equip you with the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for Optimal Health and Wellness.
Health Promotion- A National Concern…
"The Science and art of helping people change their lifestyle and move towards a state of optimal health" is a national goal."
In particular, Healthy People 2020 is a set of health objectives for the nation to achieve over the first decade of the new century. It can be used by many different people, States, communities, professional organizations, and others to help them develop programs to improve health.
Healthy People 2020 builds on initiatives pursued over the past three decades. The 1979 Surgeon General's Report, Healthy People, and Healthy People 2000: National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives both established national health objectives and served as the basis for the development of State and community plans. Like its predecessors, Healthy People 2020 developed through a broad consultation process, is built on the best scientific knowledge and is designed to measure the nation’s progress in meeting its objectives over time in 42 key health areas ( http://www.healthypeople.gov).
Healthy People 2020 challenges individuals, communities, and professionals indeed, all of us to take specific steps to ensure that good health, as well as long life, are enjoyed by all.
Among the array of services, the Health Promotion Center (HPC) at York College also strives to assist students, faculty, staff, and members of the neighboring communities to achieve optimal health throughout the lifespan.
The HPC is committed to academic excellence, with a focus on the dignity and worth of each individual. We seek to increase quality and years of healthy life and to eliminate health disparities. At the HPC, you will find that you can obtain information, educational materials, and a host of free resources. Although academic success in life is important, we believe in educating others about the relevance of self-efficacy, the benefits of making healthy choices, aborting sedentary lifestyles, and adopting healthy habits.
