Come Sing With Us!
The York College Cardinal Chorus is new vocal ensemble that's open to singers of ALL levels. Our ensemble meets on Monday evenings and offers a supportive, democratic environment for new and established singers to explore their voice through communal music-making. We perform music from a range of musical genres, prioritizing the musical compositions and arrangements of composers from minority backgrounds.
We are currently recruiting singers for our fall semester singers from all backgrounds - regardless of major - are encouraged to join us as we rehearse a concert program of secular and sacred holiday-themed music from around the world.
Democratic Participation
Cardinal Chorus members are encouraged to participate in the function, philosophy and continued progression of the ensemble. Accordingly, you may expect to find group-led rehearsals, group decision-making concerning choir activities, as well as opportunities for individual leadership. We encourage supportive interaction, personal ownership in the group and our primary musical focus is on creating and sustaining a sense of musical community as an ensemble.
Musical Training
Singers are not expected to be able to sight-read (though that is a useful skill that you will begin to learn in rehearsals!). Practice tracks/videos and other learning materials are made available for singers to help with music learning.
How to join the Cardinal Chorus
The Cardinal Chorus meets weekly on Mondays (6:00 to 8:50 pm) in the Academic Core Building (LL-01). In order to join the chorus, you will need to:
Register for MUS 138 / 238 / 338 / 438 on CUNYFirst.
Do I need to audition?
Auditions for the chorus do not determine acceptance; if you'd like to sing with us, you are welcome! However, an informal audition is required so that we may place you in the appropriate section and anticipate where your voice will fit in the ensemble. There are two ways to do this:
Option A: Attend an upcoming open rehearsal. This allows you to get to know us and how the ensemble works, as well as allowing us to get to know your voice.
Even though the current pandemic has meant that we can't meet in person, Cardinal singers are still going strong! We're still meeting online, practicing at home, and helping each other through this stressful time.
