Commencement
When is Commencement? Commencement is the graduation ceremonies typically take place at the end of the academic term—either in spring, summer, or winter. Check your school or university's official calendar.
How long is the graduation ceremony? Most ceremonies last between 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on the size of the graduating class.
Do I need to register to attend graduation? Yes, most schools require you to RSVP or register in advance to participate.
Eligibility & Requirements
How do I know if I'm eligible to graduate? Eligibility typically depends on completing required credits, GPA standards, and fulfilling any financial or academic obligations.
When do I apply for graduation? Students are required to apply for graduation on CUNYfirst during the semester prior to the semester in which they plan to complete their degree requirements for graduation. (See College Academic Calendar for exact application deadline date.) Students can apply for graduation on CUNYfirst via the Student Center or Self Service.
Caps, Gowns & Attire
Where do I get my cap and gown? They are typically ordered through a university vendor or bookstore. Be sure to order by the deadline.
What should I wear under my gown? Business casual is standard. Avoid bulky or brightly colored clothes that may show under the gown.
Can I decorate my cap? Most schools allow cap decoration, but check for any specific guidelines.
Guests & Tickets
How many guests can I bring? Schools usually limit guests due to space. Guest tickets are often required.
Is the ceremony live-streamed? Many schools offer a livestream or video recording for those who can't attend in person.
Diplomas & Transcripts
Will I receive my diploma at the ceremony? Typically, you'll get a diploma cover at the ceremony. The actual diploma is mailed later.
How do I get my official transcripts? Transcripts can be requested through your school's registrar or student portal.
Photography & Media
Will there be official graduation photos? Yes, professional photographers often take photos as you cross the stage and offer them for purchase later.
When can I take Senior Portraits for the Yearbook? Senior Photos week are hosted in the Fall and Spring during the academic year.
Post-Graduation
What support is available after graduation? Many schools offer career services, alumni networks, and graduate school advising.
Can I still use my school email or library access after graduation? Access to email or services may be limited after graduation; check your school's alumni policies.
When will I receive my alumni card or access? Please reach out to the Alumni Association for more information on membership.
