Non-Degree

Are you seeking to take courses but not enroll full-time in a degree program? Non-degree courses can help you earn college credits. Each semester, for various reasons, hundreds of non-degree students take advantage of the comprehensive coursework offered at York College.

Applicants who have started post-secondary work with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher, may file a non-degree application and submit transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. If the cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0, the applicant will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and will be required to submit official transcripts from all institutions attended. Under no circumstances will grade reports be accepted.

York College reserves the right not to admit students into non-degree status based on prior educational background.

Degree students currently enrolled in another CUNY college must apply for an ePermit using CUNYfirst.

Application and Fee

The Non-Degree application fee of $65 is non-refundable.

Please note that non-degree students are not eligible for financial aid or student loans and are billed at the non-degree tuition rate.

Matriculation Policy

Non-Degree students can apply for matriculation (degree status) during the semester in which they meet the requirements for a change of status. The change takes effect in the following semester.

To obtain a non-degree to undergraduate degree status form, visit the Office of the Registrar's webpage.

The student must meet the following conditions prior to the intended semester of matriculation:

Earn a minimum of 6 York College credits with a 2.5 or higher GPA
Have all prior official transcripts on file in the Office of the Registrar

Once your materials are received, one of our Admissions Representatives will contact you within 3–4 business days to assist with your next steps.

Second Degree

Students who already hold a baccalaureate degree from an institution and who wish to pursue a second degree must apply to York as transfer students.

All transfer students must submit the following:

CUNY Transfer Application
$70 application fee
Official transcripts from each college or postsecondary institution attended

If accepted, a second-degree student must complete a minimum of 40 credits at York College. Applicants from regionally accredited senior colleges are exempt from General Education requirements.

At least 75% of the course requirements of the major program of the second degree must be completed at York.

Senior Citizens

Senior citizens (60 or older) who are New York State residents may enroll in undergraduate courses on a space-available basis, without tuition or fee charges except as indicated below, provided they do so on an audit basis. Senior Citizens who audit undergraduate courses will not receive degree credit and grades of "AUD" will be assigned. Senior Citizens will be required to pay a $65.00 non-instructional charge and a $15.00 consolidated service fee for the semester, as well as any penalty fees (i.e., late registration, library fines, reprocessing fees, etc.). Senior Citizens who wish to enroll for credit may opt to do so on the same basis as any other degree-seeking student and must pay the applicable tuition and fees.

Admissions Process:

Must complete a Non-Degree Application
Submit proof of age (Medicare card, driver's license, non-driver's ID, or birth certificate)
The Non-Degree application fee ($65) is non-refundable

Graduate Non-Degree

Applicants who wish to take course work for personal or professional reasons without pursuing a degree may apply as a Graduate non-degree student. Our PA, MSW and MSN programs do not offer non-degree courses.

Steps to Register

To register for courses an applicant must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or the foreign equivalent; If educated outside the USA; An evaluation from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) is required for applicants who received their bachelor’s degree from a non-US institution. or use SpanTran our recommended international transcript evaluation service. They have created a custom application for York College that will make sure you select the right kind of evaluation at a discounted rate.
Have a minimum undergraduate average of B-.
Obtain the approval of the department Chair of the Master's program.

Students with International Records or International Students

If submitting academic records from a non-English speaking country, demonstrate competency in English through TOEFL (score of 61 or better or 500 or better) or IELTS (6 or better) or Pearson Academic (44 or better) or Duolingo (85 or better). Non-degree students are not eligible for federal financial aid or F-1 visas.

International students interested in doing a semester or academic year at York College as a visiting student can apply for a J-1 visa if accepted.
