Internships
The Career Services Internship Directory was created to provide information on internship and job opportunities.
An internship is an on-the-job training work experience that allows students to test out future career possibilities, and participate in pre-professional work that may be related to their career interests. Some interns find permanent, paid employment with the companies in which they interned.
Internships may be paid, unpaid, partially paid (in the form of a stipend), part-time/full-time, for school credit, virtual or micro/mini. Typically they are part-time during the university year and full-time in the summer. They usually last 6 - 12 weeks, but can be shorter or longer, depending on the company involved. The act of job shadowing may also constitute interning.
As an intern, you get a chance to work side by side with accomplished industry professionals and get a pretty good idea of what an entry-level role might entail. You’ll not only gain real work experience, but also meet and learn from the pros. An internship is the chance to figure out what you don’t want to do. Internships give you the chance to try a few things out without committing.
Virtual Internships
A virtual internship is a work experience program where students gain experience while working from a remote setting, such as from home. You are not physically present at the job location. During the virtual internship, students communicate with their employer through a range of resources, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, email, phone and webinars. Resources to prepare students for a virtual internship interview.
Volunteering
Through volunteering students gain real-world experience and practice important skills like leadership, problem-solving, and time-management. Volunteering offers students the opportunity to apply their classroom learning beyond the campus to practical areas such as social services, healthcare and education.
