What is Academic Assessment?
"Assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning and development." (Palomba & Banta, 1999)
At York College, the primary purpose of Academic Assessment is to continuously improve student learning by improving programs. The aim is to not only collect and examine evidence of student learning but to also use the results to make informed decisions regarding curriculum, pedagogy, resources and the assessment process itself.
Academic Assessment at York is faculty driven and is done in coordination with faculty, department assessment liaisons, program coordinators, and the assessment team within the Office of Institutional Effectiveness. The goal is to work toward creating sustainable and effective methods to assess student learning and use the results to improve program within available resources.
