NYS Academic Requirements

Students may be considered for a one-time waiver of the good academic standing requirement under TAP regulations established in 1981 and amended in 1996. This waiver is not automatic and is only granted in extraordinary or unusual circumstances beyond the student’s control, with a reasonable expectation that the student will meet future requirements.

The TAP Waiver and Appeals Process

One-Time TAP Waiver

Students may be considered for a one-time waiver of the good academic standing requirement under TAP regulations established in 1981 and amended in 1996. This waiver is not automatic and is only granted in extraordinary or unusual circumstances beyond the student’s control, with a reasonable expectation that the student will meet future requirements.

If approved, the one-time waiver becomes part of the student’s New York State financial aid record.

To request a one-time waiver, students must:

  • Speak with a TAP Counselor in the Financial Aid Office
  • Submit a completed TAP waiver appeal with supporting documentation

For the appeal form, please contact us or visit the Financial Aid Office.

C Average Requirement

Students who have received the equivalent of two or more years of New York State aid must maintain at least a C average to remain eligible for state aid. This means a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0. If you previously attended York College and have been readmitted, your cumulative GPA will be based on all prior grades. Students who lose NYS award eligibility for not meeting the C average requirement may regain eligibility by completing coursework without state aid until they achieve at least a C average.

C Average Waiver

The C average requirement may be waived in cases such as:

  • Death of an immediate family member
  • Personal illness or injury
  • Another extenuating circumstance that caused undue hardship

To request a C Average waiver, students must:

  • Speak with a TAP Counselor in the Financial Aid Office
  • Submit a completed TAP waiver appeal with supporting documentation

For the appeal form, please contact us or visit the Financial Aid Office.

Important: The C average requirement for Part-time TAP is an eligibility requirement that cannot be waived through either the C average waiver or the one-time good academic standing waiver.
